The 1“ish” Ton Package

Coming up in the industry and having the opportunity to mentor under some fantastic gaffers, the same unspoken rule kept being proven true, production after production.

As a colleague of mine very simply stated: if you need one of something, odds are, you’re going to end up using 3 or 4 (and sometimes 5 or 6). Over the years, time and again, that rule of filmmaking has proven itself as true as other.

And it makes perfect sense. If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t use stands and have to employ some different rigging options, you’re usually never rigging up just one light, you’re rigging several. Or trying to light a wide shot consistently. Again, you’re usually using multiples of a light, a light modifier, etc.

With that in mind, the industry standard 1-Ton grip package has its limitations. Sure, in certain scenarios, it’s a tried-and-true grip package. What comes included is pretty homogeneous across the industry. It’s light, fast to set up, and fast to break down.

But “light” can also end up meaning “light on options”, when faced with difficult lighting scenarios. At any point in time, when your gear is forcing you to make compromises - or worse yet dictating how you light - then that “light” 1-Ton package is now limiting you.

We built our grip and lighting rental package to be a bit different than others. Dubbed the 1"ish"-Ton Kit, it contains a fair bit beyond your standard 1-ton, while still being a light, portable kit, and containing everything you’d expect in a standard 1-Ton.

This package was designed with challenging locations in mind. Included are significantly more light modifiers, grip, and rigging options than a traditional 1-ton. All the standard grip equipment is included, you’re just getting more of it. We’ve included twice as many overhead / butterfly frames as a standard 1-ton, and twice as many options of fabrics to go on them.

In the end, we’ve aimed to give you a much more versatile and practical lighting package, and hope we set a new standard for what you can expect out of a 1-ton.
